Olloi's Precinct Development Stages with 5 remarkable milestones

1. Olloi Condo - 1820s Of Cotton & Coconuts

In the 1820s, the area consisted of coconut and cotton plantations, including the Confederate Estate (today part of Joo Chiat Road), The Grove, and the Perseverance Estate. Also the plantations, the area also features country houses and beachfront bungalows built by wealthy hybrids.

2. Olloi Condo - 1900-1930s On Becoming ‘Joo Chiat’

Since 1900, people leaving the overcrowded city centers have been drawn to the cooler East. The opening of Catholic churches and schools in the early 1900s made a significant Eurasian contribution to the surrounding area. Not long after, Peranakan families began to settle in Joo Chiat, building the Peranakan-style shops that Joo Chiat is known for today.

Joo Chiat is named after Chew Joo Chiat, a wealthy Chinese immigrant turned philanthropist who acquired a substantial amount of land in the area before generously putting it into public use.

3. Olloi Condo - 1940-1990s - Birth of an Iconic District

During the 1950s and 60s, landmarks such as Roxy and Odeon cinemas,

Tay Buan Guan supermarket and department stores were built in the Roxy area between Joo Chiat and Katong. In 1991, the Urban Redevelopment Authority declared 518 buildings in Joo Chiat for conservation. These are mainly two-story townhouses and terrace houses in the Transitional, Post-Construction and Art Deco styles.
